The end of the major European football leagues 2020/2021
This weekend, all the major European leagues (and a few smaller ones) played their final rounds of the 2020/2021 season. Read here about the clubs that became champions, the drama (and the lack of drama) and the top scorers of the season.Premier League
Manchester City were already champions since a few rounds back (in reality longer than that) and the relegation battle was also already settled. The part of the league where the excitement remained was the battle for the Champions League spots next season and the teams involved were Liverpool, Chelsea and Leicester.A few rounds back, the situation looked hopeless for Liverpool and they looked to be heading for total failure this season by not only losing the league title but even missing Champions League next season, but in the end they managed to sort things out and finish 3rd. Leicester on the other hand, who looked to be heading for a stable UCL spot a few round back, managed to miss UCL next season it through a generally poor ending of the league and finally a loss yesterday against Tottenham with 2-4. Despite Chelsea's loss to Aston Villa yesterday they managed to keep the UCL spot, thanks to Leicester's loss.
In the top scorer battle it has been tough battle the last rounds between Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah. Before the final round, they both had scored 22 goals each. Harry Kane was the only one who scored yesterday (in the mentioned 4-2 win against Leicester) and thus became the sole top scorer with 23 goals in total. This was his third top scorer title win in the Premier League and possibly the 27-year-old's last for Tottenham as there are strong rumors that he is about to change club.
La Liga
In La Liga the battle for the title was all the more dramatic. Before the final round, Atlético Madrid led by two points ahead of Real Madrid. Atlético played against Real Valladolid away and Real Madrid took on Villareal at home. If the excitement was at its peak before the start of the match, it was even more dramatic at half time when both teams were losing with 1-0 at half time and Real looked to have a real chance to take the title as long as they managed to turn the match into a win. They also did managed to turn it to a win when first Karim Benzema scored 1-0 in the 87th minute and then Luka Modric managed to score the 2-1 goal in overtime. However, this did not help much as Atlético had already had turned their game into a 2-1 win long before that. The big hero for Atlético was the team's best goal scorer this season, Luis Suárez, who scored the winning goal in the 67th minute.If the battle for the league title was dramatic, the top scorer battle was all the less dramatic. Lionel Messi had already won the top scorer title with his 30 goals, seven goals ahead of Villareals Gerard Moreno and chose to forgo Barcelona's last match against Eibar away. This was his eighth top scorer title in La Liga for Barcelona, and possibly the last as the 33-year-old's contract expires this summer and he has already expressed a desire to leave.
Serie A
Inter had already become the Italian champions a long time ago. Just like in the Premier League, however, there was great drama regarding the Champions League spots where Juventus looked to miss Champions League next season. However, they were saved by the fact that Napoli did not manage to win at home against Verona (the match ended 1-1) and Juventus at the same time took an easy 4-1 win away against Bologna. Very noteworthy, however, was that Cristiano Ronaldo did not play for Juventus. Officially, he was tired after playing five games in 15 days, but rumor has it that he is about to leave the club.Although Ronaldo did not play the last match, he did win the top scorer title in Serie A by far. He scored 29 goals and this actually was his first top scorer title in Serie A. He scored five goals more than Inter's Belgian Romelu Lukaku.
Bundesliga
Traditionally, Bayern Munich had already secured the league title early, eventually winning the league by 13 points ahead of RB Leipzig. All Champions League places were also filled and the only excitement in the league was in the bottom battle where Köln (Cologne) and Werder Bremen finally left.
Ligue 1
Paris Saint-Germain have been superior in Ligue 1 since the oil money was pumped into the club but this season they sensationally missed the title. Lille led the league with a one point lead to PSG before the final round and after a stable 2-1 victory away against Angers they became worthy French champions 2020/2021.The top scorer title PSG did win though, Kylian Mbappe won it by scoring 27 goals. Seven goals behind was Lyons' Dutchman Memphis Depay and Monaco's Wissam Ben Yedder, both scoring 20 goals each.
Belgium, Switzerland and Austria
Apart from the ending of these major European leagues, the seasons also ended in Belgium, Austria and Switzerland this weekend.In the Belgian Jupiler Pro League, Club Brugge became champions on the same points as Genk but were crowned champions because they had a better result in the cup than Genk. However, the top scorer title went to Genk, their Nigerian Paul Onuachu scored 33 goals and became the top scorer with a 12-goal margin to Oud-Heverlee Leuven 21-year-old Frenchman Thomas Henry.
In the Austrian Fußball-Bundesliga, Salzburg won as usual, this season by a margin of 15 points. The top scorer title was also won by Salzburg when their 22-year-old Patson Daka from Zambia scored 27 goals, 9 goals more than the Dane Nikolai Baden.
In the Swiss Super League Young Boys became champions, winning the league in superior style with a massive 84 points in total, 31 points ahead of Basel! Young Boys Cameroonian Jean-Pierre Nsame became the top scorer winner with 19 goals, becoming the top goal scorer the second year in a row.
