Who will win the top scorer title in Eredivisie for the 2024/2025 season?
Tomorrow, the top-tier Dutch league Eredivisie, currently ranked sixth among all European leagues, kicks off the 2024/2025 season. The first match is between newly promoted Groningen and NAC Breda, followed by four matches on Saturday and the round concludes with four matches on Sunday. The reigning champions are PSV Eindhoven, who comfortably won the league in 2023/2024 with a seven-point margin over Feyenoord. PSV are also favourites to win the league again this season, and as usual, their main challengers are the other two big clubs in Dutch football - Feyenoord and Ajax.
But instead of predicting who will be champions and which teams might get relegated, we will focus on the players who have a chance to grab the leagues Golden Boot title this season.
PSV Eindhoven's Luuk de Jong
Favourites to win the top scorer title in Eredivisie for the 2024/2025 season
Last season, PSV Eindhoven's Luuk de Jong and AZ Alkmaar's Greek player Vangelis Pavlidis shared the top scorer title with 29 goals each. De Jong remains at PSV, but Pavlidis has left AZ Alkmaar for Portuguese club Benfica for a reported sum of 18 million euros, meaning he is out of the race this season. Here is a ranking of the players with the best chances to become the league's top scorer this season.
1. Luuk de Jong, PSV Eindhoven
Veteran Luuk de Jong had a stellar season last year, winning the Dutch top scorer title for the second time in his career, although, like the first time in 2018/2019, he had to share the title. He has turned 33 and will turn 34 later in August, but considering how well he performed last season, he is expected to continue scoring goals despite his advancing age. Playing in the league's best team and being the teams primary penalty taker, there is no doubt he is the favourite to be the top scorer again this season.Santiago Giménez, Feyenoord
2. Santiago Giménez, Feyenoord
Mexican Santiago Giménez scored goals consistently in his Feyenoord shirt during the first half of last season and led the scoring charts halfway through the season with 19 goals in 17 matches. However, he almost completely stopped scoring after that and "only" finished third in the top scorer list with a total of 23 goals. On a positive note for Giménez, and of course for Feyenoord, he showed good form by scoring two goals in the Dutch Super Cup against PSV a few days ago, even though both were penalties. If he finds the form he had in the first half of last season, he is for sure the number one challenger to de Jong.3. Brian Brobbey, Ajax
Ajax started last season terribly but recovered to finish in fifth place. A significant reason for the Amsterdam team's turnaround was the form of young talent Brian Brobbey, who seriously got into his scoring stride. He scored 18 goals in total last season in the Ajax shirt, and if Ajax starts this season better, Brobbey is likely to improve on his goal tally from last season, perhaps even enough to win the top scorer title.Chuba Akpom - here when he played for Middlesbrough
